Climate and Seasons in India

The Himalayas isolate South Asia from the rest of Asia. South of these mountains, the climate, like the terrain, is highly diverse, but some geographers give it an overall, one-word characterization–violent. What geographers have in mind is the abruptness of change and the intensity of effect when change occurs–the onset of the monsoon rains, sudden flooding, rapid erosion, extremes of temperature, tropical storms, and unpredictable fluctuations in rainfall. Broadly speaking, agriculture in India is constantly challenged by weather uncertainty.

tn_004 India (Bharat), in Hindi, is the world’s largest democracy, and is home to the descendants of the world’s oldest civilization, the Indus Valley civilization and with “arguably” world’s oldest language – Sanskrit. It is a country showing many contrasting shades in every aspect of life. Right from snake charmers to farmers to high-tech engineers there is oppulence of variations. If in one part rice is staple diet than a few thousand miles away, it might be wheat bread. If there is desert in the west then the world’s rainiest place lies in the east. Separate Realities: India

tn_Indian Children You can see a lot of a place without really seeing anything, or see very little of it and still see a great deal. This was brought forcibly home to me by a recent trip to India. I spent just over a week in Rajasthan, travelling, living cheaply, seeing things that tourists see. One face of India. The second half of my stay was spent in and around Delhi to see two of my friends (both Indian) get married. Suddenly, I was face to face with (one part of) the real India, not a posed photo, not a cardboard cut out for the foreigner, not an image from years ago.
